One of the most stressful aspects of job hunting is waiting to hear back after submitting your resume for a job.Three Mistakes That Get Your Resume Overlooked

But the unfortunate reality is that many times people don’t hear back – ever.

Hiring managers are screening hundreds of resumes on a regular basis, some of them unsolicited.

So how do you make sure your resume doesn’t get overlooked?

Avoid these three mistakes:

  • No relevant keywords. Hiring managers don’t typically have the time to actually read your resume. They’re either using an applicant tracking system to pick up on keywords related to the job, or doing so themselves. If their scans result in no matching keywords or experience, they are not going to invest the time in really looking into your resume, much less contacting you.
  • Generic, one-size-fits-all resume. It’s not difficult to tell when someone has crafted their resume specifically for your company and the job you are advertising or when someone is doing the exact opposite. If you want to make an impression, show that you can bring value to the organization. Use keywords and highlight qualifications, and include a cover letter. These things show that you can not only do the job, but be successful in the role!
  • Blatant and easily avoided mistakes. Mistakes are huge red flags for employers. A resume is a reflection of you and the care you put into your work. If you can’t take the time to proof and edit your resume, which is your key to unlocking employment opportunities, how can an employer be sure that you are going to pay attention to detail while on the job? Check your resume for errors – and have someone else read it too for good measure!
