Hopefully you’ve all had a wonderful Independence Day Celebration and are now trying to fall back into your daily work life once again. We’re sure you had more than your share of cool beverages and refreshing summer treats over the past few days. And ice cream. Lots of ice cream.  Soft serve, hard serve, sundaes and twists! And the biggest question on everyone’s mind? Jimmies – or sprinkles?

But just because the holiday has passed us by doesn’t mean you can’t keep up the tradition and enjoy the best of summer – by picking up a local cone any day of the week!

According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), the most popular ice cream flavors rank in this order: vanilla, chocolate, cookies ‘n cream, mint chocolate chip, and chocolate chip cookie dough.

The IDFA also reports that New England has a rich history with eating ice cream—a fact supported by Yelp, which ranks New Hampshire third for states with the most ice cream, frozen yogurt, and gelato shops per capita (Maine comes in second behind Hawaii).

Here’s a couple of our favorite local ice cream shops here in Keene. Have any of your own to share? Let us know!

Walpole Creamery Ice Cream Parlor

With a shop in Keene, you don’t have to go far for a tempting scoop of classics like vanilla or chocolate, or something a bit more unique, like Fijian Ginger, which electrifies a creamy base with sweet-hot ginger.

Rick’s Gourmet Ice Cream

A colorful shop provides a staggering amount of cool choices, with both traditional, hand-scooped ice cream and soft serve. Regulars will appreciate the ever-changing flavor of the week, like the Raspberry Brownie, their Black Raspberry ice cream studded with decadent bits of brownie and chocolate cookies.

Nearby, you can find noteworthy ice cream at Kimball Farm (in Jaffrey), Haywards Ice Cream (in Milford), and Stuart & John’s Sugar House (in Westmoreland). Since you’re in the car already, you might want to follow New Hampshire’s Ice Cream Trail all the way to the Seacoast. Not in the mood to belly-up to an ice cream stand?
