While it might be tempting to hire someone as quickly as possible, the “need-an-employee-now” mentality is not going to help you in the long run.

Here are some interview strategies to help you make better hiring decisions and reduce turnover rate:

  • Evaluate culture fit. If someone has the skills to do the job, but does not possess the personality or attitude to get along with a team, or does not have the same values as the company, that individual is not likely to last long on the job. Hire someone who has most of the skills to do the job and who you know will get along well with the boss and employees, and who has the same values as the organization. The missing technical skills can be taught. After all, you can train for skill, but you cannot train for personality.
  • Assess for motivation. Did the candidate job hop, or did they have great longevity in a position? Do they have a history of promotion? Inquire about moments in their experience in which they were assigned to do something they didn’t enjoy and ask how they kept motivated. Inquire about their interests outside of work – motivated people like to stay busy.
  • Be honest. Don’t glamorize the job. Tell them about the types of challenges they might encounter on the job and see if they hesitate or lose some of their initial eagerness.
  • Contact a staffing firm. A staffing firm can help you balance the sense of urgency you may feel to fill a position, and the desire to find the right candidate for the job. Attracting, screening, interviewing, and hiring are their specialties and they have access to qualified and capable individuals who can often go to work the same day.
