ObsoleteIn order to avoid possible career extinction and survive in the ever-changing market, personal and professional evolution is necessary.

So whether you are currently seeking employment or are happily employed, you should constantly be working toward self-improvement to remain valuable to the industry.

Here are six simple tips to help you stay relevant:

  1. Be WILLING to learn.  Accept that learning is an ongoing process and that you don’t know it all.  Open your mind to new ideas and new ways of doing things. Be comfortable unlearning and relearning.  The willingness to learn is one of the most desirable skills a person can have.
  1. Be adaptable. Don’t fear change. Embrace change. Understand that it is necessary – and unavoidable.  Being responsive to change will help you avoid becoming irrelevant. Flexibility, not your past accomplishments, is key to your future success.
  1. Link up. Nowadays it is important to establish a strong, professional online presence. Most employers and recruiters use social media as a tool to find and recruit talent – LinkedIn is definitely the “hot spot.” So if you’re not on LinkedIn, create an account. If you are on LinkedIn, make sure your profile is up-to-date and that it reflects your skills and accomplishments.
  1. Keep up with industry trends. Do a little research. Take note of what has changed in the market since you first started in the industry, what has changed for consumers, and how your job has evolved from when you first began. Understanding what is happening in the industry is not just a great way to keep yourself relevant, it makes you valuable.
  1. Make connections.  Attend networking events, conferences and mixers. Reach out to people in your industry using LinkedIn. Join professional groups, both online and offline. The important thing is to build a network of contacts in your field. Having access to professionals and resources will give you valuable industry insight and keep you connected.
  1. Enhance your skill set.  Furthering your education and skill-building will help keep you aware of changes that may be occurring in your industry. You don’t need to break the bank. There are several far less costly options than seeking an advanced degree:  seminars, webinars, certifications, discipline-specific training programs, or online tutorials.

Fear you’re losing your business relevance? Reach out to a recruiting firm. They are a great resource. Recruiters have many connections and can provide insight on current industry trends. Many staffing agencies also provide free testing and tutorials to help you brush up on your skills.
