interviewPartnering with a staffing firm to aid you with your job search is an excellent idea.  Recruiters are well-connected and have access to a several companies in various industries.

But how should you prepare for your first interview with a recruiter?

The answer to that is simple: prepare as you would for any other job interview.

It’s a common misconception that interviews with staffing firms are not “real” interviews. Meeting with a recruiter is actually an interview for multiple jobs, so taking the time to prepare and make a good first impression is crucial.

Here are some tips on what you should do to get ready for that first meeting with a recruiter:

  1. Dress for success.  You don’t need to wear a full suit, but taking the time to ensure you look presentable and professional goes a long way in making a good first impression.
  1. Bring a resume.  A resume gives a snapshot of your work history. Your recruiter will likely present it to prospective employers – proofread it! Also verify that your contact information on your resume is accurate, otherwise no one will be able to reach you!
  1. Provide a list of professional references.  Have at least two professional references to provide to your recruiter: former supervisors, managers, co-workers. Avoid personal references. The goal is to get insight on how you perform as an employee.
  1. Think about what you really want.  An interview with a recruiter is great because you have the chance to share what industries or positions you are interested in. Be open and honest with your recruiter about opportunities you would be open to and where you’re not flexible. The goal is to find a position that is a good fit for you.
  1. Sell yourself.  Think about your skill set and what you have to offer a prospective employer. Be ready to tell your recruiter about specific successes and accomplishments: awards, promotions, how you saved your previous employer money, or improved processes.  The more information you provide your recruiter with, the easier it is for them to show one of their clients your value to an organization.
  1. Don’t rely solely on your recruiter for your job search. A recruiter may not have a match for your skillset right away. Check in with your recruiter periodically, but don’t depend exclusively on them.  Be proactive. Continue to look for jobs on your own and don’t take it personally if they don’t find a position for you right way.

Recruiters are great additional resource if you are looking for employment. If you haven’t registered with one yet, it’s time to reconsider.
