Everywhere you look it seems like there is another temp agency with a job to offer. Are these jobs real? Are they any good? What do I do if I need a permanent position?
It is a very common misconception that staffing agencies (aka temp agencies) only offer temporary assignments. In fact, more than half of the jobs offered and taken by employees are actually temp-to-hire. So what does that mean?
Temp-to-hire is just a common way of saying that the job is a permanent job, but in order to become that long term permanent employee (us employers don’t like the word “permanent” because some people have filed lawsuits after being fired saying they thought the job was truly permanent…Yeah, I don’t get it either), you will start out as a temp. The funny thing is that any job is temp-to-hire because the truth is you could get laid off, fired or quit any job anytime. But that is besides the point. It just means that the company has a real need for a real employee to join their team, but they would like to start the person off on a temporary or trial basis to see if it is a good fit.
Now you may think right off the bat that you can see the benefits to the employer of that arrangement, but actually there are many more benefits to the employee. For instance, you have a chance to build your resume (whether it works or not), you get to network and meet new people, you get to build on or learn new skills, and you will learn about other opportunities within the company. You will be paid the same pay rates any other employee in the same job would make for the work you are doing (agencies do not charge one cent to the employee… the fees are paid by the companies working with the agency…that is how we get paid).
To answer the question “are they any good?” consider the types of jobs in this arrangement. Everyone from nurses, doctors, engineers and IT specialists and advanced manufacturing personnel have started jobs through this arrangement. The pay can be anywhere from $10 per hour to $100,000+ per year.
