Team eating lunch at work

Lunch break features two of our favorite words: lunch and break.

But if you’re scarfing down a bag of potato chips at your desk or workstation and then getting right back to it, you’re missing out on the whole point, which is to refuel your body and clear your mind.

We at Masiello Employment thought we’d inspire you to make the most of your mid-day pause with a Lunch Break edition of Do’s and Don’t-You-Dares.

Do… Take a break, every day. We understand there may be times when an assignment demands you work straight through lunch, but it shouldn’t be a common occurrence.

Don’t-You-Dare… Bring the same uninspired lunch or always go to the same fast-food spot. Look forward to your lunch break by bringing something new or trying out a new restaurant.

Do… Go to a nearby restaurant with a co-worker or friend on occasion—a lunch break is a great time to socialize!

Don’t-You-Dare… Eat a lot of empty calories. Even if you live to eat you need to remember that what you eat effects how you live. Aim for a healthy mix of protein, carbs, veggies, and fruit.

Do… Put your smart phone away and really enjoy all the pleasures of a lunch break, whether it’s chatting with a co-worker or reading a book by a favorite author.

Don’t-You-Dare… Let an energy drink or caffeinated beverage substitute as lunch. Fake fuel doesn’t count as food!

Do… Use the time to run errands if needed. Sometimes just getting away from work for a few minutes is enough to clear your mind, even if you just went to the post office and back. Just be sure to leave enough time to enjoy your lunch, too.

Don’t-You-Dare… Stay inside if the weather is nice. Take a walk before or after lunch—if you’d like the company, invite a co-worker or co-workers and set up regular walking days if enough people are interested. You can even have contests to encourage weight loss or increased walking speed.

Do… Use the time to become acquainted with your co-workers, especially if you’re new to your job.
