Most jobs require some degree of teamwork. That’s why several job postings list “must be a team player” as a requirement. But how can you tell if someone is really a team player or not? After all, not many people are going to apply for a job and during the interview say that they hate collaborative work.

To uncover a candidate’s teamwork skills, you will have to dig a little deeper in the interview process.

Here are 3 questions hiring managers can ask during an interview:

  • What do you enjoy most about working on a team? This question is great for a couple of reasons. First, it will give you some insight as to what the individual appreciates about teamwork. Second, the moment you ask the question you can study the candidate’s reaction and response time. If they look taken aback, or like they have no clue what to say, it’s possible that they don’t enjoy working on a team at all. If you feel any answer they give is too vague, don’t hesitate to ask for more details or ask them to provide specific examples.
  • What actions or behaviors do you believe are important to the success of a team? Everyone views teamwork differently. Finding out what attributes someone values in teamwork allows you a glimpse into the way the individual defines This will help you determine if their viewpoint aligns with the way your organization defines teamwork and if their responses match up with your company’s teamwork requirements.
  • How did you handle conflicts with teammates in the past? Conflict is almost unavoidable when people need to work together. This is your chance to uncover how someone approaches conflict. Be sure to ask for specific examples. Knowing how someone deals with conflict on a team is a great way to determine whether they are a good fit for your organization.

Having a better understanding of a candidate’s view on and approach to teamwork is both useful and necessary when onboarding new employees.
