“I’ve applied to a lot of jobs online, but I never hear anything back from the companies.  I wish I could just talk to a person.  What do they do with all of those resumes anyway?”

Ever wish you could just talk to someone at a company and ask them why you never heard back from them after submitting your resume?  What would you ask them?

 

  • Was my resume even looked at by a human?
  • Was my resume lacking something important?
  • What could I have done different to score an interview?
  • Should I have included a cover letter?
  • Was the job even really open?

The Staffing Consultants at Masiello Employment Services review thousands of resumes and conduct hundreds of interviews each year.  They also work with some of the largest and most sought after employers in the region.   What does this mean to you?

Over the years we have gained tremendous insight into what works and what doesn’t work on a resume.  We know fully that some of the best candidates out there are – let’s face it – lousy at writing resumes.  We also know quite well what employers are looking for, and how to make the best candidates stand out.  We have always offered this kind of expertise and insight to our candidates for free.  And now we are excited to announce a FREE resume writing workshop series.

Job Seekers Improve Soft Skills with WorkReady NH

WorkReady NH helps job-seekers improve their skills and add a nationally recognized credential to their resume. WorkReady NH helps companies foster a skilled workforce, and find qualified applicants and employees.

The program provides assessment, instruction and credentialing in key skill areas, identified by employers as essential to workplace success. WorkReady NH will:

  1. Assess job-seekers’ basic workplace skills in Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information (the WorkKeys® Assessments)
  2. Help job-seekers improve in these skill areas to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate at the bronze, silver, gold or platinum level (through the self-paced and fully online KeyTrain™ learning modules)
  3. Provide classroom instruction in “soft-skill” practices identified by employers as key to workplace success (the Soft Skills course)
  4. Upon completion, provide a nationally recognized credential that signals to employers that the WorkReady NH participant has mastered key work-related skills and is ready to become a valuable employee

WorkReady NH is an initiative of the Community College System of New Hampshire, the Office of Governor John Lynch, the NH Department of Resources and Economic Development, and the NH Department of Employment Security.  WorkReady NH is offered at four of the NH Community Colleges:

  • Great Bay Community College (Portsmouth)
  • Manchester Community College
  • River Valley Community College (Claremont and Keene)
  • White Mountains Community College (Berlin)

As the economy continues to improve, and the job market picks up, more and more qualified professionals are searching for greener pastures. As the competition heats up, the best way to stand out from the crowd and land your next dream job may be to use some out of the ordinary methods.

Unusual Tactics – Or Brilliant Career Strategies?

The days of mailing a simple resume and cover letter are over. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that people who use many job search methods find jobs faster than those who stick to one or two traditional methods. And more recently, CareerBuilder completed a survey of job seekers to find out what unconventional methods helped them land a job.

To stand out from the competition and grab your next career opportunity, try branching out in your career search with these unconventional methods:

1. Send a letter addressing a specific company need. Want to stand out from the pack when approaching your next potential employer? Research their history and needs, and propose a solution to a problem the organization may be facing. You’ll make an immediate impact on the organization, and you’ll show off your skills much more effectively than through a couple bullet points in your resume.

2. Look the part. Prepare a business card and brochure with your information, combined with the logo and information of your prospective employer. That’s right – go into the interview process with the confidence that you are the perfect new addition to their team! Your creativity and confidence are sure to impress… or get you sued.  Try this at your own risk.

3. Show off your creativity. Forget about dull, boring, dime-a-dozen cover letters. Impress your next employer by announcing your arrival – with a news release, that is. Haven’t written a news release? Many online resources, which can be found with a simple Google search, offer tips for writing an effective news release. State your qualifications and unique differentiators in the release – after all, this is newsworthy! Not only will your new employers be floored by your unique sense of creativity, they will already have your hiring announcement taken care of – before you even start!

These are just some examples of creative ways to share your skills and confidence with potential employers. When using unconventional methods, it’s important to always maintain a sense of professionalism – without losing your enthusiasm. Ensure your resume is remembered for the right reasons, and use these unconventional methods to help you find your next great opportunity.

Let’s face it, looking for a job is hard work and not often a whole lot of fun.  You have to talk about yourself, sell yourself, and basically be okay with some tactful bragging.  Of course this goes against most of what you have learned about being a likable human being.  Your instincts tell you that blowing your own horn means you are full of yourself, and that “people who talk about themselves are annoying!”  But the rules of the game change a bit when you are on the hunt for the next step in your career.

If you don’t talk about yourself and point out your accomplishments, no one else will.  I suppose you could bring your mother on an interview and she can brag for you: “Oh he is such a good boy, how could anyone not hire him?” but that may turn your would be employer off.

Whether you are seeking a job with a staffing firm or a Fortune 500 company, the process is pretty much the same. Start by crafting a compelling résumé. This will help you identify your marketable skills. Then, before you apply for a job, make sure that your skills match what the company is looking for.
