First Impressions Are Important, But When Do They Happen?

Congratulations! You have an interview. You have prepared mentally, dressed appropriately, remembered to turn off your cell phone (I hope), and are walking into the office five minutes before your scheduled interview. You have checked in with the receptionist who has politely asked you to take a seat.  You know the person conducting the interview will be paying close attention to everything you say and do, so you try to relax for a few minutes. This seems like a good time to gather your thoughts, since no one is paying attention to you. Or are they? READ MORE »

Does your job feel like work?

Jan09

Leave a Comment Julie Written by Julie

Most of my family members and friends talk about how much they dislike going to work.  They dread Monday mornings, they hate their boss, they don’t enjoy what they do every day, they don’t feel valued or appreciated and – BIG surprise – every one of them is actively looking for a new job.  Not only does this surprise and sadden me it makes me feel really lucky, because I love my job and enjoy going to work every day.

I am not just saying that because my boss will be reading this…I am saying it because it is true and I believe every person should be lucky enough to say the same thing.

So, why do I love going to work every day?

  • I love what I do.  Sounds simple I know, but if you don’t love what you do, then you are doing the wrong thing.
  • I am surrounded by people who work hard and also love what they do.  The bar is set and the expectations are high.  There is nothing worse than workplace negativity and feeling like your teammates aren’t carrying their weight. However, all you can really control or change is your own behavior.  Carry your own weight, contribute, collaborate and encourage….you will be surprised to see how this raises the bar and how others follow your lead.  Give it a shot, it sure beats being negative about your teammates all the time.
  • We have fun every single day.  It’s true, you can work hard AND have fun.  In fact the two go hand in hand.  We make time to connect as people not just co-workers, we enjoy pot luck meals together, have competitions, listen to beach tunes on Friday afternoons, have filing parties when the work gets backed up, ring a bell when work orders come in and most importantly we laugh and we celebrate all our successes big and small.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, on average we spend 16.2 hours per day either working or sleeping.  If you hate your job, I bet you aren’t sleeping well either.

On average we spend 16.2 hours per day either working or sleeping

So you may be asking “What is the point of this story?”  The number one reason I love what I do is because we help people find great jobs every single day and the good news is we can help you too.   Call Masiello Employment Services today to learn about all of our exciting employment opportunities so you can make the move toward finding a job you love and enjoying every one of the 24 hours in your day.

Missing your degree? Here are 5 ways to land a great-paying job.

Stand out from the crowdFinding a job in a competitive market is a tremendous challenge for all job seekers. If you haven’t got a college degree, it can seem like an especially daunting task. But, while a degree is important to many employers, there are still ways to stand out from the pack and land a great-paying job.

Take your career to the next level, without going back to school.

Here are five ways to boost your marketability and help land your next great career opportunity:

1. Build a local network. Meet professionals in your desired industry or career. Do an Internet search for professional organizations in your area, and be sure to get out there and attend mixers and events. Talk to professionals and for advice, or better yet, talk about your skills and strengths. Not only will you gather valuable information as your begin your new career search, you’ll also be selling yourself to prospective employers!

2. Refresh your resume. A degree isn’t everything. Real-world experience, and even more importantly – accomplishments, are a key factor in hiring decisions. Take a look at your resume, and ensure that your accomplishments are highlighted prominently. Education should take a back seat to the results that you’ve generated for past employers!

3. Start learning again. You don’t have to enroll in college to increase your knowledge. Take the time to borrow or purchase textbooks, business journals, and other resources to learn the latest trends, challenges and industry information. Your lack of a degree shouldn’t have any  bearing on your industry knowledge. Don’t be afraid to flex those muscles!

4. Find a career advocate. Consider partnering with a professional recruiter. Trained recruiting professionals know exactly which skills to highlight – skills that prospective employers will find valuable when searching for their next professional star. Plus, professional recruiters and staffing firms often have access to jobs that aren’t advertised elsewhere, helping to give you the upper hand in your career search.

5. Be positive. When you start interviewing, let your confidence shine through. You may not have a college degree, but you have the experience and knowledge needed to thrive in your new role. Make sure that your confidence and positivity shine through during an interview!

Resume Tips: 5 Ways to Help Employers Overlook Gaps in Your Resume

Jun29
2011
1 Comment Written by Jason

The missing pieceGaps in employment are becoming increasingly common, as many professionals have endured the ebb and flow of our recent economy.

Don’t miss your opportunity!
Keep your resume at the top of the pile, and help employers overlook any gaps in your employment history, by following these five tips:

  1. Don’t Call Attention to Gaps. Let your accomplishments stand on their own, and don’t be quick to point out any gaps in your employment history. A potential employer may not even notice, and you should be focusing on your positives!
  2. Don’t Lie. This is never a good idea anyway, but don’t be so nervous about gaps in your history that you try and fudge your background or dates. It’s not worth possible loss of employment down the road, and you don’t want to get yourself trapped in a worthless lie.
  3. Do Volunteer Work. If you’re currently unemployed, you can still keep your skills sharp (and expand your professional network!) by volunteering in the community. Many non-profit organizations need help from professional volunteers, and working in the community will show that you have been flexing your skills while unemployed.
  4. Take classes. Another way to keep gaps from looking so…gaping, is to take classes. Whether in a community center or at your local college, taking classes in your area of expertise will demonstrate to potential employers that you are serious about advancing your career, and that you are the type of employee who makes lemonade out of lemons – you’re taking initiative to make yourself better, after all!
  5. Seek temporary employment opportunities. Noticing a trend here? Don’t be afraid to turn down opportunities to grow and advance because you’re looking for full-time employment. Temporary career opportunities can help you fill gaps while you’re out of full-time work, and will make your resume that much tighter when you find the right career opportunity.

Land that Gig – Unconventional Methods Can Help You Find Career Success

Leave a Comment Written by Jason

As the economy continues to improve, and the job market picks up, more and more qualified professionals are searching for greener pastures. As the competition heats up, the best way to stand out from the crowd and land your next dream job may be to use some out of the ordinary methods.

Unusual Tactics – Or Brilliant Career Strategies?

The days of mailing a simple resume and cover letter are over. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that people who use many job search methods find jobs faster than those who stick to one or two traditional methods. And more recently, CareerBuilder completed a survey of job seekers to find out what unconventional methods helped them land a job.

To stand out from the competition and grab your next career opportunity, try branching out in your career search with these unconventional methods:

1. Send a letter addressing a specific company need. Want to stand out from the pack when approaching your next potential employer? Research their history and needs, and propose a solution to a problem the organization may be facing. You’ll make an immediate impact on the organization, and you’ll show off your skills much more effectively than through a couple bullet points in your resume.

2. Look the part. Prepare a business card and brochure with your information, combined with the logo and information of your prospective employer. That’s right – go into the interview process with the confidence that you are the perfect new addition to their team! Your creativity and confidence are sure to impress… or get you sued.  Try this at your own risk.

3. Show off your creativity. Forget about dull, boring, dime-a-dozen cover letters. Impress your next employer by announcing your arrival – with a news release, that is. Haven’t written a news release? Many online resources, which can be found with a simple Google search, offer tips for writing an effective news release. State your qualifications and unique differentiators in the release – after all, this is newsworthy! Not only will your new employers be floored by your unique sense of creativity, they will already have your hiring announcement taken care of – before you even start!

These are just some examples of creative ways to share your skills and confidence with potential employers. When using unconventional methods, it’s important to always maintain a sense of professionalism – without losing your enthusiasm. Ensure your resume is remembered for the right reasons, and use these unconventional methods to help you find your next great opportunity.

New Candidate Resource Center

Let’s face it, looking for a job is hard work and not often a whole lot of fun.  You have to talk about yourself, sell yourself, and basically be okay with some tactful bragging.  Of course this goes against most of what you have learned about being a likable human being.  Your instincts tell you that blowing your own horn means you are full of yourself, and that “people who talk about themselves are annoying!”  But the rules of the game change a bit when you are on the hunt for the next step in your career.

If you don’t talk about yourself and point out your accomplishments, no one else will.  I suppose you could bring your mother on an interview and she can brag for you: “Oh he is such a good boy, how could anyone not hire him?” but that may turn your would be employer off.

Masiello Employment Services now has some helpful resources for job seekers on the new Candidate Resource Center.  The resource center contains the following sections and hundreds of articles for you, including: READ MORE »

Have you ever left a job interview feeling like you were a shoo-in, only to receive a “Thanks, but no thanks” reply? While your qualifications may be excellent, and your interview questions superb, the answer could be in what you’re not speaking.

It could be in what you’re saying, non-verbally.
Experts suggest that anywhere from 50 to over 90 percent of communication is non-verbal. Which means you could be unknowingly sabotaging your chance at landing your dream job with non-verbal communications.

Keep yourself on the top of the list, and prevent non-verbal mishaps, by paying attention to the following: READ MORE »
