“I’ve applied to a lot of jobs online, but I never hear anything back from the companies.  I wish I could just talk to a person.  What do they do with all of those resumes anyway?”

Ever wish you could just talk to someone at a company and ask them why you never heard back from them after submitting your resume?  What would you ask them?

  • Was my resume even looked at by a human?
  • Was my resume lacking something important?
  • What could I have done different to score an interview?
  • Should I have included a cover letter?
  • Was the job even really open?

The Staffing Consultants at Masiello Employment Services review thousands of resumes and conduct hundreds of interviews each year.  They also work with some of the largest and most sought after employers in the region.   What does this mean to you?

Over the years we have gained tremendous insight into what works and what doesn’t work on a resume.  We know fully that some of the best candidates out there are – let’s face it – lousy at writing resumes.  We also know quite well what employers are looking for, and how to make the best candidates stand out.  We have always offered this kind of expertise and insight to our candidates for free.  And now we are excited to announce a FREE resume writing workshop series.

Our first workshop will be held at our offices in Keene, New Hampshire on February 23, 2012 from 12 noon to 1pm.  A brief question and answer period will follow if you have time.

“Oh No, Not Again!” Four Resume Buzzwords to Avoid at All Cost!

Standing out from the pack in a sea of resumes can be one great way to land your next job. We understand that; however, do not be tempted by resume buzzwords. Sure, they sound exciting at first, and you might even think they give your resume a little…pizzazz. But resume buzzwords can be deadly!

Banish the buzzwords!

Sure, they might seem like a good idea at the time, but resume (and LinkedIn profile) buzzwords can take your resume from the top of the pile to the trash (or recycle) bin. Last year, LinkedIn reviewed its profiles and identified the top 10 most overused buzzwords included by its members. Now, take a deep breath and take a look at your resume…are any of them included (it’s okay, they’ve crept on to many resumes in their time!)?

Stay at the top of the pile and help land your next job by avoiding these overused buzzwords:

1. “I have extensive experience.”
Relevant is experience is definitely a good thing. But “extensive” doesn’t tell a hiring manager much at all. How many years of direct experience do you have? Do you have relevant experience elsewhere? Get into the details here, and talk about what it is that makes your experience so very “extensive.”

2. “I’m a results-oriented professional.”
Have you ever gone into work thinking, “Today, I really hope that I don’t accomplish anything?” Probably pretty unlikely. And if you’re looking for work, it’s a safe bet that you’re really hoping to accomplish some results. So then tell us, what exactly do you mean by “results-oriented?” This term has little to no meaning, which means it has zero value on your resume. Instead, focus on your actual results. What results have you generated for your previous employers? Take a look at it this way. Think of, “What did you accomplish,” rather than, “Did you accomplish anything?”

3. “I’m a team-player.”
Think back to your grade school years. Weren’t you always taught to get along with others? In that regard, yet again this term doesn’t help you stand out from the pack, but fit right in the middle. Instead, think about what ways you helped your employers by working as part of a team. Or maybe you took some initiative and lead your team. Give concrete examples of your accomplishments, and you’re sure to impress.

4. “I’m a real problem-solver.”
Seeing a pattern? Overused buzzwords aren’t necessarily buzzwords at all, they’re useful information – when you can back them up. Did you encounter a difficult problem, or an area of improvement, and take the opportunity to improve the situation? How did you overcome it? What was the result? The more details you can give, the better.

Missing your degree? Here are 5 ways to land a great-paying job.

Stand out from the crowdFinding a job in a competitive market is a tremendous challenge for all job seekers. If you haven’t got a college degree, it can seem like an especially daunting task. But, while a degree is important to many employers, there are still ways to stand out from the pack and land a great-paying job.

Take your career to the next level, without going back to school.

Here are five ways to boost your marketability and help land your next great career opportunity:

1. Build a local network. Meet professionals in your desired industry or career. Do an Internet search for professional organizations in your area, and be sure to get out there and attend mixers and events. Talk to professionals and for advice, or better yet, talk about your skills and strengths. Not only will you gather valuable information as your begin your new career search, you’ll also be selling yourself to prospective employers!

2. Refresh your resume. A degree isn’t everything. Real-world experience, and even more importantly – accomplishments, are a key factor in hiring decisions. Take a look at your resume, and ensure that your accomplishments are highlighted prominently. Education should take a back seat to the results that you’ve generated for past employers!

3. Start learning again. You don’t have to enroll in college to increase your knowledge. Take the time to borrow or purchase textbooks, business journals, and other resources to learn the latest trends, challenges and industry information. Your lack of a degree shouldn’t have any  bearing on your industry knowledge. Don’t be afraid to flex those muscles!

4. Find a career advocate. Consider partnering with a professional recruiter. Trained recruiting professionals know exactly which skills to highlight – skills that prospective employers will find valuable when searching for their next professional star. Plus, professional recruiters and staffing firms often have access to jobs that aren’t advertised elsewhere, helping to give you the upper hand in your career search.

5. Be positive. When you start interviewing, let your confidence shine through. You may not have a college degree, but you have the experience and knowledge needed to thrive in your new role. Make sure that your confidence and positivity shine through during an interview!

Resume Tips: 5 Ways to Help Employers Overlook Gaps in Your Resume

Jun29

The missing pieceGaps in employment are becoming increasingly common, as many professionals have endured the ebb and flow of our recent economy.

Don’t miss your opportunity!
Keep your resume at the top of the pile, and help employers overlook any gaps in your employment history, by following these five tips:

  1. Don’t Call Attention to Gaps. Let your accomplishments stand on their own, and don’t be quick to point out any gaps in your employment history. A potential employer may not even notice, and you should be focusing on your positives!
  2. Don’t Lie. This is never a good idea anyway, but don’t be so nervous about gaps in your history that you try and fudge your background or dates. It’s not worth possible loss of employment down the road, and you don’t want to get yourself trapped in a worthless lie.
  3. Do Volunteer Work. If you’re currently unemployed, you can still keep your skills sharp (and expand your professional network!) by volunteering in the community. Many non-profit organizations need help from professional volunteers, and working in the community will show that you have been flexing your skills while unemployed.
  4. Take classes. Another way to keep gaps from looking so…gaping, is to take classes. Whether in a community center or at your local college, taking classes in your area of expertise will demonstrate to potential employers that you are serious about advancing your career, and that you are the type of employee who makes lemonade out of lemons – you’re taking initiative to make yourself better, after all!
  5. Seek temporary employment opportunities. Noticing a trend here? Don’t be afraid to turn down opportunities to grow and advance because you’re looking for full-time employment. Temporary career opportunities can help you fill gaps while you’re out of full-time work, and will make your resume that much tighter when you find the right career opportunity.

Tips for Job Seekers

Whether you are seeking a job with a staffing firm or a Fortune 500 company, the process is pretty much the same. Start by crafting a compelling résumé. This will help you identify your marketable skills. Then, before you apply for a job, make sure that your skills match what the company is looking for. If so, prepare an effective cover letter and send it to the prospective employer along with your résumé. If you get an interview, get ready for it well before you go. There may be more than one. For example, your first interview may be with a staffing firm and your second one with its client. READ MORE »

Double-digit unemployment means that competition for available jobs is tougher than ever. In a time when a single job opening can yield literally hundreds of responses, what can you do to help move your resume to the top of the stack? Include a cover letter – always. Why? The reasons are simple. A cover letter allows you to:

  • personalize your resume;
  • grab an employer’s interest by emphasizing your strengths and assets;
  • explain why you’re the ideal candidate for the job;
  • solicit an interview. READ MORE »
