Does your job feel like work?

Leave a Comment Julie Written by Julie

Most of my family members and friends talk about how much they dislike going to work.  They dread Monday mornings, they hate their boss, they don’t enjoy what they do every day, they don’t feel valued or appreciated and – BIG surprise – every one of them is actively looking for a new job.  Not only does this surprise and sadden me it makes me feel really lucky, because I love my job and enjoy going to work every day.

I am not just saying that because my boss will be reading this…I am saying it because it is true and I believe every person should be lucky enough to say the same thing.

So, why do I love going to work every day?

  • I love what I do.  Sounds simple I know, but if you don’t love what you do, then you are doing the wrong thing.
  • I am surrounded by people who work hard and also love what they do.  The bar is set and the expectations are high.  There is nothing worse than workplace negativity and feeling like your teammates aren’t carrying their weight. However, all you can really control or change is your own behavior.  Carry your own weight, contribute, collaborate and encourage….you will be surprised to see how this raises the bar and how others follow your lead.  Give it a shot, it sure beats being negative about your teammates all the time.
  • We have fun every single day.  It’s true, you can work hard AND have fun.  In fact the two go hand in hand.  We make time to connect as people not just co-workers, we enjoy pot luck meals together, have competitions, listen to beach tunes on Friday afternoons, have filing parties when the work gets backed up, ring a bell when work orders come in and most importantly we laugh and we celebrate all our successes big and small.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, on average we spend 16.2 hours per day either working or sleeping.  If you hate your job, I bet you aren’t sleeping well either.

On average we spend 16.2 hours per day either working or sleeping

So you may be asking “What is the point of this story?”  The number one reason I love what I do is because we help people find great jobs every single day and the good news is we can help you too.   Call Masiello Employment Services today to learn about all of our exciting employment opportunities so you can make the move toward finding a job you love and enjoying every one of the 24 hours in your day.

Hello….Newman! What To Do When Your New Co-Worker is Your Old Nemesis

Remember when Jerry’s arch nemesis Newman showed up on “Seinfeld?” The utter contempt these two men had for each other was palpable…and hilarious.  But when you encounter a nemesis in real life, it might not be so funny.

It’s a fact of life – you’re not going to like everyone. Some people you flat-out dislike. And  like a moment out of a bad movie, sometimes you end up facing your old nemesis down the line. Even at work.

Let bygones be bygones.

But hey, we know that’s easier said than done. It can be hard to encounter people you truly dislike again. Remember, though, you’re a professional, and you can handle it. Here are three tips to help you get through it, and thrive:

  1. Keep it to yourself. Maybe your new coworker humiliated you at the senior prom, in front of hundreds of other attendees. It stunk. And you’ve harbored resentment for the last 10 years. But, keep it to yourself. If you share your ill will with your co-workers, it will get back. And guess who’ll end up looking like the poor sport? Gossip and bitterness do not look good on you – so keep them to yourself.
  2. Stay focused. Don’t let your long-lost hard feelings distract you from what’s most important – doing your job. At the end of the day, that’s what really matters, so stay focused, do your job, and you’ll end up just fine.
  3. Watch your back. In all likelihood, what’s in the past is also in the past for your former nemesis. But, it never hurts to keep your eyes and ears open. If, for some reason, your former nemesis is gunning for you, it’s best to be prepared. Nip any rumors started and avoid looking paranoid, but pay attention to what’s going on in the office.

Stressed at Work? It’s About Time You Relaxed!

As much as we like our jobs, from time to time we all encounter some workplace stress. And when you feel stressed at work, it only compounds itself. Before you know it, you’re a tense, grumpy wreck.

Don’t become the office grump.

These six tips are low-cost, easy ways to relax at work. Try a few or try them all, but give them a shot, so that you can handle the inevitable stress that comes with work:

  1. Workplace yoga. No, you won’t have to bend like a pretzel! But simple yoga moves have been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and help you feel revitalized.
  2. Take a break. Get up, walk around, even go outside and go for a quick walk. Sometimes the best way to relax is to get away from what’s causing the stress in the first place! If only for a few minutes, get away from your desk and indulge in some stress-free activity.
  3. Schedule your day. No schedule is impenetrable, but if you block out your day, leaving room for unexpected occurrences, you’ll be better equipped to handle the stress that can creep up during a typical workday. Identify your top tasks for the day, and schedule them (even adding them to your Outlook calendar, if appropriate). You’ll be more likely to stick to them, and you’ll have a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day!
  4. Breathe deeply. This is another one of those techniques that, like yoga, you might be afraid to try. But for the sake of argument, let’s give it a try now. Close your eyes (well, read this first), sit up straight, and inhale deeply to a count of six. Then exhale slowly to a count of seven. Repeat 10 times. Now, tell me that you don’t feel relaxed! Deep breathing is proven stress-reducing technique. It will help you relax and focus, and approaching your day will seem far less insurmountable.
  5. Get more sleep. Staying up until 1am to watch that “Golden Girls” marathon may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but now you’re dragging, and ever little thing is setting you off. Moral of the story? Get some sleep. Regularly. You’ll feel better, and your day will be much more easy to handle.
  6. Listen to music. Think that your iPod is only good for the gym? Think again. Put together your favorite playlist and, if duties permit, get your work done to your favorite tunes. Just don’t blame us when your co-workers revolt against your cubicle karaoke (we said “Listen to music,” not “Serenade your coworkers”).

Have You Been Fired? Don’t Let It Stall Your Career.

Sometimes people get fired. It happens, and while it certainly isn’t the most desired outcome, it doesn’t have to mean the end of your career. If you’ve managed to avoid discussing your previous employers in job interviews, consider yourself lucky. It will come up eventually, and when it does, you had better be prepared.

You need to address being fired in your interviews!

If you’ve been fired from a previous job, don’t avoid the question. These five tips will help you address the situation and move on to the rest of your interview:

  1. Be honest. If you’re directly asked whether you’ve been fired, don’t lie. It’s a bad idea, it’s unethical, and it will certainly catch up with you. Don’t do it.
  2. Don’t make excuses. Address what happened, honestly, and move on. Don’t make excuses about why you were fired. You’ll appear whiny, and no one wants to hire a whiny employee.
  3. Avoid trashing your previous employer. As much as you might be tempted, don’t trash your previous employer. Even if your last manager was over-the-top mean and cruel, your prospective employer doesn’t want to hear it. And the interviewer has likely never met your old manager. Even if he or she was a true demon, there is no way to verify that – so you’ll end up looking like the difficult one. Plus, if you trash your previous employer, who’s to say you won’t trash your new employer down the line?
  4. Address what you learned from the experience. If you were fired, you likely made a mistake or two down the line. Address why you were fired, and show how you learned from the experience. Showing growth, and the ability to learn from your mistakes, demonstrates emotional and professional maturity, and a willingness to learn.
  5. Prepare your answer ahead of time. Talking about something as emotional as being fired is not going to be easy. Lay out your answer ahead of time, but try not to sound rehearsed. Map out some bullet points you’d like to address, then speak from the heart. You’ll feel more comfortable and collected during the interview.

New MESI location in downtown NorthamptonIt’s official, the sign is up and our furniture is scheduled to be installed on Friday. Tomorrow we will have internet!  Masiello Employment is opening its third office (second in Massachusetts) in Northampton, MA.

While attending Holyoke Community College I worked in Northampton at the Vermont Country Deli.  Even 12 years later I still count it as one of the greatest jobs I have ever had.  Looking back, I know that one of the best parts of that job was being part of downtown.  Northampton has such a great mix of activity and culture, and opening an office there feels like coming home.

Our entire team is very excited to join the downtown business community.  Helping people find great jobs and linking them up with new opportunities is going to be a lot of fun.  We are looking forward to getting involved and helping out wherever we can.

Come and visit Masiello Employment Services’ new Northampton, MA office at 6 Market Street, Northampton, MA.  Only a 4 minute walk from the Northampton parking garage.

United Way Awards

Excerpted from an email sent earlier to the team at Masiello Employment:

Good Morning,

I wanted to let you all know of the great efforts that were made a few months ago to aid the community.   United Way put together a fund drive to benefit many area programs which give so much to those in need around the Monadnock area. Sherryl Bemis took the initiative and accepted one of the Loaned Employees from the drive and together they kicked off a great campaign here in the office. We were able to have a kick-off party and learn a bit about the participants such as those in need of mental health and housing services. Sherryl continued her efforts to host a raffle to all our employees over the 2 week drive to raise more money for the United Way.

Last night we attended the end of the season awards ceremony and accepted 2 awards! One, the Gold award is given to companies which achieved $100 or more per captia and the Trailblazer Award which is given to companies who achieve the highest per capita giving in the 1st year of the employee campaign.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of all who gave and the wonderful efforts of Sherryl to educate and motivate us all through the campaign!

As they say at the United Way …. “The Winner is…. All of Us” ! Great job!

Have a great day!

Tips for Job Seekers

Jul29

Whether you are seeking a job with a staffing firm or a Fortune 500 company, the process is pretty much the same. Start by crafting a compelling résumé. This will help you identify your marketable skills. Then, before you apply for a job, make sure that your skills match what the company is looking for. If so, prepare an effective cover letter and send it to the prospective employer along with your résumé. If you get an interview, get ready for it well before you go. There may be more than one. For example, your first interview may be with a staffing firm and your second one with its client. READ MORE »
